Almost always cheaper to repair — provided the fault is something specific like a solenoid, valve body, or torque converter rather than catastrophic internal damage. A diagnostic scan and fluid check tell us which side of the line your transmission is on before you commit to any major spend.

Most manufacturers now say 60,000–100,000 km for automatics, or every 4–5 years. Some 'sealed for life' units still benefit from a fluid service well before failure — particularly DSG and CVT, where fluid breakdown causes mechatronic and shudder faults. We follow your handbook and tell you honestly whether a fluid service will help your symptoms.

Healthy ATF is bright red and smells faintly sweet. Brown fluid with a burnt smell means the clutch packs have been slipping and overheating — the fluid has cooked. Black, burnt fluid with metallic glitter means internal wear has already happened. We always pull the dipstick or drain a sample before quoting, because the fluid tells us a lot.

Most commonly the mechatronic unit (the valve body and TCM combined) developing internal faults, or worn dual-clutch packs. Sometimes it's just due for a DSG service — fluid and filter change to spec. We scan for adaptation values, road-test, and tell you whether a service will fix it or whether the mechatronic needs reconditioning or replacement.

Often yes. CVT shudder on Nissan, Subaru, Honda and some Toyota CVTs is usually fluid breakdown — the friction modifier wears out and the steel belt slips against the pulleys. A drain-and-fill (sometimes two, to fully refresh the fluid) with the correct CVT fluid often fixes it. If the belt or pulleys are damaged, that's a bigger job and we'll tell you straight.

A solenoid pack or valve body job is usually 1–2 days. A full rebuild — gearbox out, stripped, planetary gear set inspected, clutch packs, seals and bearings replaced, then refitted — is typically 4–7 working days depending on parts availability and the transmission type. European and supercar units take longer.
